Well, I had very good intentions of going to Maumee Bay State Park early this morning, but weather wouldn't let me go. I got up at 5AM and hoped to get there not long after sunup but I saw there was some scattered rain showers on the radar this morning on the news so I decided to lay back down a few hours and then find other things to do. When I saw the skies clear up the latter part of this afternoon, I decided to give some evening fishing a try there.
When I got there it was about 6:30PM. I decided to use my heavy action rod with a crawler cast out off the bottom, and my ultralight rod straight down off the pier with waxworms. Within a few minutes I found the panfish to be hitting. There was a couple of guys fishing near me that were using minnows and hitting panfish after panfish after panfish. Within a half hour of showing up they had caught several, but pretty much all were small.
By 7:30PM I personally had caught 4 little bluegills. I brought my heavy action rod in and decided to try a cut bluegill on it as bait and see what happened. Come to find out nothing was interested in that.
When the guys left about 8PM they had left a minnow lying on the pier so I decided to bring in the ultralight/waxworm gittyup bust out the light rod with a bobber with the minnow as bait for a little bit but nothing was hitting it. So about 8:30PM I decided to bring that in and give the ultralight and waxworms another try.
A few more guys showed up about 8:30PM and was using minnows mostly. Three of the four caught a few small bluegills between them, but one of them near the shoreline of the pier was having some kind of luck with nightcrawlers. He caught two really nice catfish on top of a couple smaller ones he had caught at another spot using nightcrawlers. The ones he caught were both about 18" or so. He also caught a few small bluegills.
About 9PM I caught my last fish, another small bluegill using the waxworm and ultralight set up. Once it got too dark too see around 9:20PM I packed up and called it an evening, but not before being stopped by a couple COs from the park checking my fishing and drivers licenses, which of course I obliged. They also checked the other guys but everybody was legal and legit.
